This Saturday, March 30, marks Earth Hour and energy users are encouraged to switch off any unneeded lights and appliances for just 60 minutes.

The annual event, organized by the World Wildlife Fund, encourages people turn off unnecessary lights between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. to combat climate change and raise awareness about energy conservation.

Earth Hour began as a symbolic 鈥渓ights out event鈥� in Sydney, Australia and is now the largest, worldwide grassroots movement for the environment, according to WWF.
Last year, however, B.C. Hydro said there was actually an increase in electricity use across B.C. during Earth Hour for the first time in a decade. Province-wide, electricity use rose by 0.2 per cent. In the Lower Mainland, electricity use rose by 0.5 per cent.
BC Hydro customers interested in seeing how much they saved by participating in Earth Hour can view an hourly breakdown of their electricity use for Saturday evening by logging onto their online MYHydro account.
