Burnaby cops dropped the hammer on a pile of crazy construction zone speeders

Police nailed 54 drivers with violation tickets Thursday in a Burnaby "cone zone" in just a short period of time.

The FortisBC project upgrading old gas lines has been in Burnaby for a long time.

The project swept through Brentwood in the summer of 2018 and kept moving east into this year 鈥 with work now being done at multiple locations, including on Lougheed at Springer, Bainbridge at Lougheed and on Broadway, east of Arden.

It鈥檚 at these location that traffic officers with the Burnaby RCMP were staked out on Thursday to deal with speeding issues in construction zones. The speed limit is lower in construction zones, but that doesn鈥檛 stop drivers from being reckless around workers and flaggers.

Police nailed 54 drivers with violation tickets Thursday in just a short period of time. It鈥檚 like fish in a barrel when it comes to reckless drivers. Many drivers have been clocked in Burnaby construction zones lately doing more than twice the speed limit of 30 km/h.

Speeding in construction zones puts lives at risk. According to the RCMP, 13 construction workers were killed and 213 were injured due to motor vehicle accidents between 2008 and 2018.

鈥淐one Zones can make a difference,鈥 tweeted the Burnaby RCMP.

So, idiots, pay attention and slow the *%$# down.
