The parks board has released its plan to construct the most uninviting Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»park in recent memory, and I agree with many locals who've expressed their dismay over its design.
The space where it's to be constructed is currently an asphalt parking lot with a few picnic tables and logs placed throughout it and, I hate to say it (I actually don't hate to say it), but its current state is better than what it will be replaced with.
They're about to pave a parking lot and put up what nobody would consider to be a paradise.
More of a plaza than a park, it looks like a modern, urban walkway.
One of the features is what they're touting as a "sun rock," and in it says it's meant "for people to lay on and climb on."
All of this is apparently what Vancouverites asked for.
Two rounds of consultation were done, in 2020 and 2022, with hundreds of people sharing their ideas on what they'd like to see at the park at the intersection of Main Street and 7th Avenue.
What we seem to have asked for is a "park" with a lot of concrete, some trees, a rock, and a few places to sit.
It's currently called "Main & 7th Park," though it will eventually be given an official name by the City's official Park Naming Committee before it opens in the spring of 2025.
My hope is that they land on Sun Rock Park, in reference to the most interesting thing in it.
