Darcy Cooper, 28, was sentenced March 13 to a 90-day conditional sentence for violent assaults on his former girlfriend almost a decade ago.Â
Cooper appeared by video in Fort St. John provincial court and was sentenced on charges of assault and assault with a weapon. Court was told Cooper abused his former girlfriend between April 2010 and June 2013, hitting her in the head with a studded belt, punching her in the face, head-butting her, hitting her across the legs with a sheathed machete, and kicking her in the ribs.
Cooper was also given a 12-month probation order, a mandatory firearms and knife ban, and a curfew. A restraining order was imposed to protect the victim, and the sentence will be served in Victoria, where Cooper now lives.
The Crown asked for a six to nine-month jail sentence. Prosecutor Jeremy Fung said Cooper has expressed no remorse for his actions.
Cooper is also expected to check in with police for DNA sampling, and to attend regular counselling sessions for anger management.
