SURREY, B.C. — Police say a woman who had been walking with two children is dead after being struck by a cargo delivery vehicle that had no driver.

RCMP in Surrey, B.C., received a report on Tuesday of a crash involving two vehicles and a pedestrian.

Cpl. Elenore Sturko says there is a school nearby, where students would have been heading home around the same time as the crash.

Police say it appears the unoccupied cargo van rolled into traffic, where it struck another vehicle before hitting the woman on the sidewalk.

The investigation is in its early stages and Sturko says the vehicle will be examined to determine how it rolled into traffic without its driver.

The driver was delivering parcels and an Amazon statement says it is working with law enforcement and the delivery service partner as they investigate.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and loved ones during this difficult time," the emailed statement says.

Sturko says the driver responsible for the unoccupied vehicle is "distraught" about what happened and was co-operating at the scene.
