New Westminster police are appealing for witnesses after an individual reported being chased by a man armed with a pipe after he’d withdrawn money from an ATM.
Officers with the New Westminster Police Department were dispatched to a 911 call in the early morning hours of Friday, Jan. 27, when a man reported being chased after withdrawing case from a bank’s ATM in downtown New Westminster. Police say the suspect fled with the victim’s money.
“Thankfully, the victim escaped unharmed,” said the news release. “The suspect is not known to the victim.”
Officers rushed to the scene, but the robbery suspect was not located. Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.
The suspect is described as male who was wearing a yellow jacket and a black medical-style facemask.
“This incident is upsetting, and, understandably, some people feel vulnerable using an ATM,” said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Justine Thom. “If you ever observe suspicious vehicles or people, leave the area and return during regular business hours. The presence of other customers and staff lowers the risk of these personal robberies occurring.”
Anyone with information about the incident can call the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
