A special weather statement is in effect for Metro Vancouver, as strong winds sweep across the region Wednesday.

Environment Canada cautioned Tuesday the lower mainland was due to welcome a cold front overnight, bringing with it strong, westerly winds of 50 to 70 km/h near the water and 30 to 50 km/h more inland.

Today, communities across the region will experience "strong, gusty winds," says the national weather agency, cautioning those gusts "may toss small loose objects, or cause small tree branches to break."

The winds are expected to be strongest near the Strait of Georgia, and will likely persist through the afternoon and ease tonight.

The special weather statement applies to the following Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»areas:

  • Central including the City of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Burnaby and New Westminster
  • North Shore including West Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»and North Vancouver
  • Northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Southeast including Surrey and Langley
  • Southwest including Richmond and Delta

Wednesday's forecast for Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»calls for mainly sunny skies and a high of 17 C.
