Vancouver's seawall wraps around much of the city's downtown waterfront, but one section has been closed and will remain closed for weeks.
The part of the seawall that passes under the Burrard Bridge is currently closed due to construction for the SenÌ“áḵw project, the large multi-tower development on Squamish Nation land beside the bridge.
The detour began Jan. 6 and will run until Feb. 20, according to the project's website.
"Stormwater runoff from the SenÌ“áḵw project is being routed through the new road adjacent to Phase 1 of the project and will ultimately flow into an existing outfall located just off the seawall path into False Creek," reads the .
The closed section runs between the Burrard Bridge and Creekside Drive.
Pedestrians and cyclists looking to travel along the seawall from Vanier Park to areas like Fishermen's Wharf or Granville Island have to walk up to Burrard Street before the bridge's span begins and cross at Cornwall Avenue.
"We understand this is an inconvenience and are working to finalize this work as quickly as possible," states the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»parks board in an email to V.I.A. "This closure is part of the SenÌ“áḵw project on Squamish Nation Reserve land, but storm works occur on lands outside the Reserve."
On the SenÌ“áḵw website, it's noted the closure could be extended "depending on the soil conditions encountered in the excavations and other factors not in the contractors' control."
Overnight work means some possible late night noise
The project has also recently received a notice variance to allow for overnight work at the site.
"To accommodate ongoing high tides, the City of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»has granted a revised noise variance that will go into effect on January 20," reads a notification on the SenÌ“áḵw site. "This will allow work from 8:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., however, it is not expected that work will extend beyond 3:00 a.m."
