British Columbia's "vaccine passport," formally known as the BC Vaccine Card, went into effect on Monday, Sept. 13.
While proof of at least one shot of an approved coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination is now required to access select discretionary businesses and events province-wide, multiple kinds of businesses and venues do not. That means many people's day-to-day lives do not involve needing to show the BC Vaccine Card QR code, or, for the time being, a paper vaccination card issued by a health authority.
The BC Vaccine Card has been largely well-received in the province, with more than 2.2 million people in the province having obtained their cards since the program was announced Sept. 7. On Sept. 13, many first-time users reported the experience was seamless when arriving to eat at restaurants or to enter their gym.
As of Sept. 16, 86.3% (3,998,779) of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 78.8% (3,652,033) received their second dose., the B.C. Ministry of Health reported Thursday.
Paper health authority vaccine cards will be accepted, with government-issued photo ID, until Sept. 26. Starting Oct. 24, people looking to access certain businesses and events will need to have proof of two doses of COVID-19 vaccine. The what non-B.C. residents must provide in place of the BC Vaccine Card. Masks remain mandatory in all indoor public spaces under a public health officer order for the time being.
