Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»police are investigating after the Komagata Maru memorial was vandalized for the second time.
Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Police Department (VPD) launched an investigation Tuesday (Oct. 4) after news of shattered glass on the front of the memorial, located on the waterfront in Coal Harbour, was shared on social media. Police note that the memorial appears to have been intentionally damaged.
This is the second time in 14 months that the Komagata Maru memorial has been deliberately defaced.
“We don’t just want to find the person who did this, but also understand why this cherished memorial was targeted,” says Cst. Doucette. “We’re looking into whether this vandalism is connected to a similar crime Saturday morning at the Olympic Cauldron in Jack Poole Plaza.”
A four-month investigation of the first incident in August 2021, which involved someone using paint to vandalize the memorial, led to the arrest of Yuniar Kurniawan who is currently charged with mischief.
Anyone with information about the new incident is asked to call the VPD at 604-717-0613 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
