A VPD community safety officer was injured when a police vehicle was hit by a vehicle driven by a person suspected to be impaired in Vancouver.

A Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Police Department community safety officer is recovering after a police vehicle was involved in a collision overnight.

The incident happened around 10 p.m. on June 25 when the vehicle they were in was struck at Main Street and East 2nd Avenue.

Police believe the driver of the other vehicle, who fled the scene, was impaired.

"The driver was later located in East Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»and taken into custody," Sgt. Steve Addison told V.I.A. "The VPD community safety officer was taken to hospital."

They were later released.

"The officer was examined overnight in hospital and is likely going to be very sore," stated Addison. "We’re thankful the injuries were not more serious."

Police are still investigating the incident.

Addison explained that a "community safety officer" does not hold the rank of constable and is not a police officer but is rather a VPD staff member.
