A man convicted in a 2022 stabbing has been rearrested by the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Police Department (VPD) after breaching the conditions of his release.
David Morin, 27, was convicted of stabbing a Mexican tourist inside the Harbour Centre Tim Hortons on the morning of Jan. 22, 2022, in what police described as a random attack. Morin was arrested three days later.
He pleaded guilty later that year to aggravated assault and was sentenced to three years in prison.
Morin was granted statutory release by Correctional Service Canada in June, according to police, and was allowed to live in Vancouver.
When he was released following serving two-thirds of his prison time, the VPD warned the public he would be living in the city.
Morin posed "a high risk of significant harm to the community, and that compelling circumstances exist to warn the public that he will be living in Vancouver," the VPD explained at the time.
Rearrested for breaching release conditions
Morin has now been rearrested by the VPD.
"Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Police arrested David Richard Morin on a Canada-wide warrant Monday afternoon at his Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»halfway house," states the VPD in an October 29 press release.
His release in June 2024 came with several conditions.
"Among the conditions of his release was a requirement to abstain from consuming illicit drugs or alcohol," states the police department. "The Canada-wide warrant was issued after he allegedly breached those conditions."
Morin remains in police custody as of the time of publication.
