While fireworks are illegal to light off in Vancouver, it seems a significant portion of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» readers ignored that bit of the law Oct. 31.
In a poll more than 7.7 per cent of readers in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»said the light off fireworks for Halloween. While that was the choice with the least number of votes, that would still mean more than 28 of the 402 local respondents had, or were planning to, light off fireworks.
When including people from outside of Vancouver, the percentage bumps up to more than 8.4 per cent.
The vast majority of locals, though, aren't into personal fireworks performances. More than 70 per cent agreed with the statement 'Nope, not my thing.'
Legally, consumer fireworks are not supposed to be set off in Vancouver. The city banned them back in 2020. Provincially they're still allowed between Oct. 24 and Nov. 1, but many municipalities have their own bans similar to the one in Vancouver.
On Halloween night fire crews with Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) patrolled the city. VFRS responded to more than 70 complaints related to fireworks, they say and say tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage was done.
In and outside of Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»fireworks weren't very popular either, with some saying it was "one of the worst years."
The poll ran from 10/30/2022 to 11/2/2022. Of the 737 votes, we can determine that 402 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:
