'Expectations for the weekend should be tempered': Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»forecast includes cloud, moisture

"We don't have the most picnic friendly weather come Saturday and Sunday."

Grey clouds will be hanging over Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»this weekend but a couple of sunny days are in the weather forecast starting on Aug. 13, 2024.

While the weather will likely improve over the next couple of days, don't expect that trend to hold for the weekend.

Environment Canada meteorologist Armel Castellan tells V.I.A. that conditions will improve until Thursday, but by the weekend they will have shifted again.

"People's expectations for the weekend should be tempered," he says.

In unrelated news, the PNE starts this weekend.

But first, the weather will get nicer, with cloud cover melting away in the short term.

"What we're expecting is the clouds will partially breakup throughout the day," he says of Tuesday, Aug. 13. "As the sun warms the lowest levels it will kind of 'melt the clouds,'" he explains.

That will continue over the next couple of days, with cloud cover increasing a bit overnight and then receding even more the next day; it's a trend that will continue until Thursday when there should only be a few clouds in the sky by the afternoon.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»weather forecast includes weekend disturbance

A trough off the coast of Oregon is expected to bring disturbances, and while Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»won't be in the bullseye, it'll still feel the impact. Friday the clouds are expected to return, though showers won't occur immediately.

"We do have a bit of a disturbance making its way over the weekend," Castellan says. "We don't have the most picnic-friendly weather come Saturday and Sunday."

While heavy rain isn't in the forecast for the weekend, some moisture should be expected. However, it's uncertain when it'll arrive.

"I guess the take home here is we don't yet have all of the accuracy and precision for this weekend to make really conclusive statements," says Castellan.

Right now it looks like later on Saturday will see showers, but that could shift. By Sunday afternoon the sky could be clear again.

Throughout all of this, Castellan says temperatures should be stable and very close to the average for this time of year.

"The temperatures are right bang on what we call seasonal," he says.

That means highs of 22 C each day and overnight lows around 14 C.

The first taste of autumn

Castellan notes that current weather is a sign of seasonal change, as the sun setting earlier is starting to have an impact on weather and cloud types typical of the fall are starting to appear.

"It's that perceptible fall-like pattern that's starting to influence the weather," he explains.

Notes for travellers

While the coast has clear air, Castellan notes that those travelling into B.C.'s interior should be aware of a couple of things.

Coastal regions aren't dealing with lightning these days, but there are a few places in the southern interior where that's a possibility.

"When thunder roars, go indoors," he reminds people.

And, related to that, is the possibility of smoke; there are still some areas in the interior where air quality warnings are in place.

"People just need to be careful with their health when it comes to smoke and fine particulate matter," Castellan explains. "We're still very much in the wildfire season."

And just because there are no fires in the immediate area doesn't mean the air is clear; in previous years smokey skies in B.C. were attributed to fires hundreds of kilometres away, or further.
