Vancouver-based Scanline VFX worked on HBO's Game of Thrones.

One of the most well-known special effects studios is being bought by Netflix.

Scanline VFX, which has an office and artists in Vancouver, will be acquired by the streaming behemoth early next year, according to a press release.

"Netflix will invest in Scanline’s pipeline, infrastructure and workforce and continue to support the pioneering work that Scanline’s Eyeline Studios is doing in virtual production to push the boundaries of what is visibly possible," says the streaming corporation in a press release.

Scanline was founded over 30 years ago by Stephan Trojansky in Munich, Germany. Along with the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»office, it has locations in Los Angeles, Montreal, London, Munich, Stuttgart and Seoul.

They've worked on a huge number of blockbuster movies and special effects-laden TV shows. That includes everything from 300 to X-Men: Dark Phoenix. They've won a variety of awards for their work, including an Oscar for technical achievement in 2008 for their fluid rendering system Flowline.

"Going forward, the company will continue to operate as a standalone business and work with their variety of clients," says Netflix.

How much the sale will be for and where the investment in infrastructure and workforce will go has not been announced.
