'An inspiration for all Vancouverites': City recognizes late coach, former basketball star with official day

He was also an athlete with the provincial and national basketball teams.

The City of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­proclaimed May 6 as John Dumont Day in honour of the late coach's and UBC basketball star's community contributions to sport and fitness.

A local legacy-maker and one of UBC’s most celebrated basketball players is being recognized today (May 6). 

John Dumont coached thousands of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­kids in basketball and other sports. Prior to coaching, Dumont was a student and basketball star at UBC, as well as an exceptional athlete with the Basketball BC provincial team and the Canadian Basketball junior national team. 

He died Sept. 1, 2016, after a year-long battle with an aggressive form of cancer known as sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma. He died one year to the day of his initial diagnosis.

In honour of Dumont's legacy and contributions in sport and fitness, the City of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­proclaimed May 6 as John Dumont Day. 

"John cherished the beauty of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­and theh limitless access to parks, beaches, school playgrounds, fields and courts plus the sidewalks and streets where he rode and ran throughout his life," reads the full proclamation shared in a by the City.

The proclamation adds that Dumont "serves as an inspiration for all Vancouverites."
