Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»as a moisture-laden system moves into the region.

In a statement, the federal forecasting department states that heavy rainfall will continue over Howe Sound and Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»today. Tonight, rainfall will spread to the Fraser Valley.

This system will deliver 40-70 mm of rain by Thursday morning.

The rainfall warning is in effect for:

  • Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»- central including the City of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»- North Shore including West Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»and North Vancouver
  • Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»- northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»- southeast including Surrey and Langley
  • Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»- southwest including Richmond and Delta

By Thursday, the rainfall is expected to decrease, but the persistent moist, onshore flow will cause showers, heavy at times, to continue. The heaviest rain amounts are expected near the mountains and eastern sections of the Fraser Valley.

This evening's forecast also calls for strong winds that will continue into Thursday morning. There is also a risk of thunderstorms through the night.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Environment Canada advises you to watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
