Canada's first package-free grocery store company is shutting down after eight years on the market.
Nada announced it'll be ending operations; Wednesday, May 31 will be its last day.
"From the beginning we were supported by an incredible community, but with pandemic closures, post-pandemic changes in shopping habits, and a difficult funding landscape, we have not been able to recover, and can no longer sustain the financial losses," the company states in a blog post.
The company closed its grocery storefront on April 30, but continued operating out of a Mount Pleasant warehouse as an online store with a circular delivery model. On May 30 they announced their permanent closure.
"We want to thank you - our customers, community partners, suppliers, and team for helping realize Nada’s vision," they say in their blog post.
Brianne Miller, a local marine biologist, started Nada as a pop-up in 2015 when she was inspired by the plastics she saw in the environment. In 2018 a permanent storefront was opened at Fraser Street and Broadway.
"Together, we’ve diverted over 1.5 million pieces of packaging from landfills, hosted countless community events, and helped over 10,000 customers embrace sustainable shopping habits, creating a ripple effect of sustainable actions well beyond our shopping baskets," notes the blog post.
