A 鶹ýӳfamily feels "shattered" after losing their nine-month-old golden doodle.
Owner Sean Murty was walking Laika around the Coal Harbour area when she got spooked by a loud bang.
"The leash slipped out of my hand and she just took off. I ran after her for blocks but couldn’t catch her," he told V.I.A.
Murty's wife Shelley Stieler immediately posted their missing puppy on Facebook and Instagram and put posters up around the city where she was last seen in Olympic Village. The couple also enlisted a company called Pet Searchers who have used drones, thermal imaging equipment and bloodhounds to try to find her.
Laika is microchipped and all of the local veterinary hospitals and shelters know she's missing.
鶹ýӳfamily desperate to find missing puppy
Laika was only with the Murty family for four days before she went missing. They recently lost their family dog, Ruby, who passed away at the age of 13 on May 1 from an "expensive and ultimately unsuccessful surgery," Murty explained.
She was being trained as a therapy dog but had a bad experience at the kennel where she was training and was pulled out of the program. Murty noted that she "is a very shy and nervous puppy who barks quite a bit."
A family friend, Brenda Adtruson of “Brends Doodles” in Williams Lake, raised Laika and gifted her to the grieving family. She is Ruby's niece and was given to them to help get through the pain of losing their dog.
"That is the therapy she has been providing to our family in the very short time that we have known her. Our home was happy again," he said.
"And now it feels shattered."
Anyone who sees Laika or has information about her whereabouts is asked to call 604.842.1282. Do not chase her as she is timid and easily frightened.
