Two pitbull terriers injured during brazen daylight shooting in downtown Vancouver

Two dogs were injured in a downtown Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­shooting on March 30, 2024, near Richards and Robson streets in the early evening.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­first responders discovered two injured dogs after a brazen daylight shooting in the city's downtown core on the Easter long weekend. 

The Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­Police Department (VPD) received multiple calls of shots fired near Richards and Robson streets around 5:40 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, according to a press release. 

The major artery was closed to traffic for several hours as investigators collected evidence from the scene; additional VPD officers were also deployed to the area to assist with the investigation. 

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) also responded to the scene and made an "" in the area secured by police. Two pitbull terriers were shot in the incident, according to an Instagram post. 

"Our members immediately sprung into action, providing first aid and dressing the wounds of these animals on site," described the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­Fire Fighters IAFF Local 18. 

No update on dogs injured in daylight Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­shooting

Firefighters helped transport the dogs to care but do not have "further updates on their condition." 

The VFRS added that their commitments to community safety "extend beyond fighting fires," to diverse situations including ones involving "our four-legged friends."

VPD Sgt. Steve Addison told V.I.A. that two dogs were in the car that was shot at and had been taken to the hospital following the incident. Police do not have an update on their status. 

The VPD believes the shooting was targeted but has not stated if the suspect(s) are known to police.

"It’s possible there will be more violence as a result of this incident, but we’re working to prevent that from happening," he said, adding that the VPD has increased its "visible police presence in the downtown core to deter violence and to give people a sense of comfort and security."
