A Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»man has now been charged in the deaths of two passengers in his vehicle following a crash on Cypress Bowl Road early Sept. 2.
According to police, a group of people in three separate vehicles were out celebrating around 4 a.m. when the driver of a Jeep crashed while coming into the hairpin turn just above the West Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»works yard.
Two 20-year-old Surrey men were killed.
“It's our understanding that they were actually celebrating the birthday of one of the people involved. Unfortunately, it was actually one of the people who was killed during the crash,” said Const. Kevin Goodmurphy, West Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»police spokesman. “And we do suspect that speed and alcohol likely played a contributing factor in this incident.”
On Friday, the Crown swore two counts of criminal negligence causing death against Dilpreet Singh Sandhu, 22.
Sandhu spent a brief time in hospital before being returned to West Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»cells.
The road was closed until 2 p.m. on Thursday while the RCMP’s Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service was on the scene. Their investigation continues. Sandhu is due back in court on Sept. 8.
“It's absolutely horrific any way you look at it, but the fact that it was one of the deceased's birthdays, I think is that much more impacting. It's just absolutely horrible and tragic for everyone – family and friends,” Goodmurphy said.
