Two people were arrested by the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Police Department (VPD) yesterday, Sept. 13, after a protest on Broadway.
The protesters were in front of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»MLA George Heyman's constituency office; he's also the provincial Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. Police estimate up to 40 people participated in the protest which shut down Broadway near Ash Street in the late afternoon.
“The protest was impeding eastbound vehicle traffic along Broadway Avenue,” says VPD Cst. Tania Visintin in a press release. “The protesters were given several warnings to move off the road. The majority of the protesters moved towards the sidewalk, however two people refused.”
They were arrested for mischief and intimidation for obstructing the road. They've been released and have a future court date.
The protest involved and was in support of the ongoing Fairy Creek protest west of Victoria where there have been nearly 1,000 arrests.
The local Extinction Rebellion chapter has two more similar protests planned for the same location today and tomorrow. They've dubbed the three days of protests "3 Days of Love and Rage."
