Transit aficionados may now purchase TransLink-branded face masks from the company's .

Last month, the transportation agency launched a new campaign aimed at encouraging the use of face coverings and non-medical masks on Metro Vancouver’s transit system. As part of the ‘Wearing is Caring’ campaign, it is handing out more than 15,000 TransLink branded masks at key transit hubs.

In addition to branded face masks, the campaign also includes systemwide posters and decals installed to promote the use of face coverings and non-surgical masks.

“We want masks to become a regular part of our transit system,” says TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “As part of our Safe Operating Action Plan we are recommending customers wear a face covering or mask while on transit or waiting for transit, if they are able to do so. If we can get to a point where most people on transit are wearing a face covering or mask, then it will be a safer experience for everyone.”

Now, the public may purchase a single or 2-pack bundle of the branded masks. Each face covering is transit-patterned with bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express symbols.

The 2-pack bundle includes one multi-colour and one two-tone TransLink mode icon design. The masks are machine washable and reusable non-medical face masks made from double-layered, 100% polyester fabric. They also include an internal pocket to insert a filter sheet (filter not included).

Adult face masks are one-size fits most and measure 8-5/8" x 5-1/2”.

The masks are available for both adults and kids. They can be purchased for the following prices:

  • $12 for an adult-sized mask
  • $10 for a kid-sized mask
  • $22 for two adult masks
  • $40 for a family pack containing two masks for adults and two masks for kids.

On its website, TransLink adds that, "It is recommended the mask be washed before first use to sanitize. Masks are recommended when physical distancing is not possible, but this mask is not a replacement for medical grade protective equipment and using this mask does not replace other recommended measures to stop the community spread of COVID-19. Please continue to follow medical guidelines, practice physical distancing, wash your hands, and refrain from touching your face."

A portion of proceeds will be donated to the United Way.

In May, the transportation agency advised riders to wear non-medical masks or face coverings while waiting or on-board its vehicles. It also advised commuters to travel outside of peak hours and to stay home if they felt sick.

TransLink is also still in the process of giving away roughly 35,000 branded masks at transit hubs to encourage wearing face coverings on transit. The locations and times masks are being handed out will be tweeted to the .
