Sabrina Duda has mastered the art of online dating.
The Vancouverite grew popular on for her clever, amusing songs about the men she'd matched with on dating apps, which she would send to them as conversation starters.
Some of her biggest TikTok hits are a customized "Slim Shady" song for Tyler, a version of "Starships" for Stefan, and an adaptation of "Call Me Maybe" for Ben (the latter has nearly five million views).
Her singsong approach to dating began with outside-the-box thinking. "I was interested in a guy and [thought] what can I do to get his attention and make myself stand out?" she recalls in an interview with V.I.A.
Having made music since she was a child, the idea to write songs came naturally. "I'm a musician so I thought I could write him a song," says Duda. She also threw in a dash of humour into her song and "sure enough, it caught his attention."
When Duda later joined the world of online dating she decided to use her old trick to get guys' attention. Not only has it worked, but it brought in over 23,000 followers on TikTok (and counting).
While most men have a positive reaction to their personalized tune, no one has made one for Duda yet. "I honestly wish that somebody would send me a song back because that would probably end up being my husband," she jokes.
Some, however, have negative reactions and sometimes instantly un-match with her. "I'm also happy with those because I feel like it's a positive thing. It's almost like the songs become little filters," she says.
It doesn't take her long to write a song too. "No more than 10 minutes for a long song," she notes. Perhaps this skill comes from her natural musical talent.
Duda discovered music in fifth grade when she picked up an old guitar and began to figure out and play songs on her own -- with no lessons or prior music experience. "I knew then that I had some kind of gift," she says.
In her early teens she auditioned for "The Next Star" which was a Canadian reality competition television series that was broadcast on YTV. She ended up making it as a finalist in the top 16. Later she made it as a finalist on another reality competition show called "Urban Star."
The local musician recently finished recording a new song, which has been in the works for about a year, and will be filming a music video for it soon. The song and video will be released within the coming weeks, she tells V.I.A.
