Race walker Evan Dunfee beat the 35-km world record in Slovakia on Saturday.

Richmond Olympian Evan Dunfee just shaved seven seconds off the world record in the 35-kilometre race walk.

He was taking part in the Dudinska 50 World Tour in Dudince, Slovakia, and came in at two hours, 21 minutes, 40 seconds.

Dunfee got the idea of racing the 35-kilometre after finishing with a personal best last month in the 20-kilometre race walk in Adelaide, Australia.

There were 100 men and women at the competition in Slovakia.

By the 25-kilometre mark, Dunfee was 40 seconds under the world-record pace, but then he started to struggle at the 29-kilometre mark. He dropped to 33 seconds under the pace at the 30-kilometre mark.

The last five kilometres were “a bit scary,” Dunfee said as he "had a few kilometres that were slow enough to put me over the record if I maintained them.”

“The last three kilometres I was able to dig deep, reset, and increase my pace just enough to break the record,” he added.

Dunfee is back in Richmond training once again.
