This long weekend was an unseasonably warm one, but it did deliver on a quintessential fall moment in the form of a dazzling full moon.
The Hunter Moon appeared to glow orange at times and was seemingly full all weekend long, casting the evenings in a delightful autumnal hue.
The extended full moon, or "double" full moon, is caused by shorter rising times which happen around this time of year. Meaning, the moon rose in the east last night (Oct. 9) and will appear to rise again in the northeast tonight (Oct. 10). While the moon has already begun to move into its waning gibbous phase, the change in illumination is negligible to our eyes, so it still appears full. The harvest moon back in September had a similar effect.
Many people across the Lower Mainland were understandably charmed by the celestial event and have been sharing their snaps on social media.
