Photos: One dead in vehicle fire at Coquitlam aquatic centre

RCMP are investigating what the local detachment calls an isolated, "deeply tragic" incident.

One person was found dead in a vehicle set ablaze in the parking lot of Coquitlam's City Centre Aquatic Complex today, Sept. 15.

RCMP were called to the at around 11:35 a.m., according to a news release, following reports of the fatal incident.

Spokesperson Cpl. Alexa Hodgins said an investigation is underway and police are calling the event "deeply tragic."

"We want to assure the public that there is no risk to the public as this is believed to be an isolated event and is not linked to any on-going conflicts."

Local firefighters found a body inside the burned out shell after extinguishing the flames.

Mounties taped off the aquatic complex parking lot after arriving on scene.

Police are now reaching out to the public in hopes of collecting more details about the case.

Anyone with more information on the fatal vehicle fire, including possible video footage, is asked to call Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file 2024-24487.
