The man charged with second-degree murder in connection with Vancouver’s first homicide of 2024 may plead not guilty in the case

The body of Alexander Lo, 31, was found in a home near Vancouver’s Knight Street and East 33rd Avenue around 1 a.m. Jan. 28 after police were called.

Dwight William Kematch, 39, was arrested in the East Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»house when Lo was discovered, police said.

Kematch appeared by video before Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Provincial Court Judge Jennifer Oulton on April 12.

Defence lawyer Jim Heller told Oulton that layers were in the process of trying to figure out a time frame for the case and for scheduling a preliminary hearing. Such hearings are generally held to determine if enough evidence exists to proceed to trial.

Those hearings are covered by publication bans so as to prevent tainting of a potential jury should a case go to such a trial type.
