A man was arrested after allegedly threatening a restaurant owner with a stun gun over his dinner bill.

The New Westminster Police Department reports that three diners were leaving a pizza restaurant in Queensborough about 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6, when they were confronted by the restaurant owner. The trio was allegedly leaving the restaurant without having paid their bill.

“One of the diners allegedly produced a stun gun, sparked it, and asked the restaurant owner if he wanted to die over a $200 bill,” said a NWPD press release. “This prompted staff to call 9-1-1, and New Westminster Police Department patrol officers searched the area for the three individuals.”

Later, the police department was called to a Queensborough residence at about 1 a.m. because two people were refusing to leave another man’s home. When officers arrived at the residence and saw the trio, they determined that the individuals matched the descriptions of the people who had been at the restaurant earlier in the evening.

Police arrested one man and submitted a report to Crown counsel recommending charges of assault with a weapon and uttering threats against the Surrey resident.

“This kind of intimidating behaviour is not tolerated in New Westminster,” NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar said in a press release. “The restaurant staff did the right thing by not taking matters into their own hands and calling 9-1-1.”
