The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says they are working to resolve issues with the George Massey Tunnel counterflow system.

According to the Ministry in a late Thursday morning news release, an electrical problem is affecting the morning counterflow lane markers in the southbound tube. The afternoon counterflow remains in place and is unaffected by this issue.

“As part of safety upgrades in the tunnel, the ministry is upgrading the lane control system to new, more visible LED lane control markers. The problem affecting the morning counterflow has been traced to a compatibility issue between the new lane markers and the older control system,” said the Ministry in the news release. “The Ministry's electrical contractor is working to re-establish the morning counterflow as quickly as possible.”

The Ministry says drivers using the George Massey Tunnel on the morning of Friday, April 16, should allow additional time or plan an alternative route.
