The city estimates the buildings will provide 50 self-contained suites.
In response to Vancouver's growing homeless population, the city announced on Wednesday that it would attempt to build additional temporary housing for homeless people living in the DTES.
No opening date has been given, the city must first complete a public feedback process and enact policy changes before the project can move forward. The modular housing units are slated to be installed at 501 Powell Street and the 1100 block of Franklin Street, which is currently serving as a "tent city".
This comes just days after substantial demonstrations from who protested the development of temporary modular housing in Marpole due to their proximity to schools.
There are currently more than 2,100 homeless people currently living in Vancouver. The city’s first temporary modular housing site opened earlier this year at Main and Terminal.
