A morning fire was quickly put out Wednesday, saving the lives of several very young puppies who were nearby.
The seven puppies and their mother were in a small barn on property in rural Port Kells, in North Surrey, when a small fire started the morning of April 19.
Luckily the smoke was quickly spotted and called into the Surrey Fire Service, says Asst. Chief Greg McRobbie. A fire truck with four firefighters was dispatched and they swiftly found the small barn.
When they broke open the door a dog quickly escaped.
The crew moved into the smoky structure and found a small fire in the back; they were able to douse it.
"It was then they found seven puppies and were able to bring them out quickly," says McRobbie.
Firefighters went back in to search the building but found nothing else of note.
Animal control was called and took over responsibility for the puppies and mother dog says McRobbie, adding that by that time all the dogs had been checked out and were doing fine.
He says it's great that the story had such a positive outcome, noting that crews train to save human lives, but not other lives so much.
"It's not very often that these incidents come in and have a happy ending," he tells V.I.A., adding that it was the quick call from the public and crew's quick response that made it possible.
