Police are investigating an incident where a man was punched in the face by a stranger during a random assault in Vancouver's West End in September.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»police are looking to the public for help finding a man who randomly punched another man last month.

The assault happened on Sept. 18 when the victim, a 52-year-old man, was walking to work at Davie and Howe streets around 5 a.m. A man walking the opposite direction punched the victim in the face, police state in a press release.

The punch disoriented the victim and knocked him off his feet. It left him with serious injuries to his face.

"We know the victim was picked up by a taxi in the area and taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery for a fractured jaw,” says Const. Tania Visintin.

As the victim went directly to the hospital, the attack wasn't reported to police until several days later and they weren't able to visit the area to speak to witnesses after the attack. Police believe several people witnessed what happened and are now looking to speak with them.

"This assault appears to have been completely random and has left the victim with serious injuries to his face,” says Visintin.  “We believe there were people in the area who may have witnessed this assault and are asking them to come forward and speak with investigators.”

The suspect is described by police as a man standing 5'10" with a husky build and broad shoulders. He was wearing a dark coloured hoody, a dark jacket, blue jeans and a dark mask a the time of the attack.

Anyone who may have information about what happened is asked to call the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Police Department's major crime section at 604-717-2541.
