Majority support culling Stanley Park coyotes: poll

Almost a quarter prefer only non-lethal options

After dozens of reported cases of attacks on joggers, picnickers and children, the B.C. Conservation Officer service will be from Stanley Park. Lately, the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­Parks Board has been closing the park at night and warning people to stay out of certain areas. The issue has been highly divisive among park users and animal advocates. A majority, however, feel the cull is the right choice.

North Shore News polled 439 North Shore News readers and asked the question: Do you agree with culling the Stanley Park coyotes?

The poll ran from Sept. 8 to Sept. 10. Of the 439 votes, we can determine that 174 are from within the North Shore community. The full results are as follows:

Yes, the safety of humans must come first. 60.59 % total, 59.20 % local    
Maybe, but it should be a last resort. 15.95 % total, 17.24 % local    
No, we should use non-lethal options only. 23.46 % total, 23.56 % local

This result provides for a 95% confidence level +/- 4.67% margin of error in the local community.
