Knife fight, not shooting sparked Burnaby RCMP response in Metrotown

Police say alcohol appears to have been a factor in a fight with a knife outside a Station Square restaurant Thursday.

Burnaby RCMP was called to Station Square in Metrotown for reports of a fight involving a knife Thursday.

A knife fight, not a shooting brought police to Station Square in Burnaby Thursday night, according to police.

Officers were called to Silver Drive at about 10:20 p.m. for reports of three men fighting—with witnesses saying a knife was involved, according to a Burnaby RCMP news release.

“It’s believed two men were leaving a nearby restaurant, when they got into a physical fight with a third man, who was not known to them, in a parking lot. A knife was pulled during the incident,” the release said.

Two of the men allegedly involved fled the area in a vehicle later boxed in by police near Kingsway and Sussex Avenue, according to police.

A 33-year-old man found inside the vehicle was taken to hospital with stab wounds, which appeared to be superficial, police said.

The second person in the vehicle, a 40-year-old man, was not hurt, according to police.

A 27-year-old man involved in the fight was found in the area by police and taken to hospital for injuries that also didn’t appear to be serious, police said.

A knife was located nearby and seized as part of the investigation, according to the release.

Burnaby RCMP is investigating the incident, and witnesses who haven’t yet spoken with police are asked to call Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999. Quote file number 22-25834.

A video of the police response posted online described the incident as a gang fight, and there was speculation the incident had involved a shooting.

But Burnaby RCMP said the fight doesn’t appear to have been gang related and there was no shooting.

“Alcohol does appear to be a factor,” read an emailed RCMP statement.
