We're having to put our summer sun on pause as a wet weather system brings more rain today to Metro Vancouver

Environment Canada issued a early Friday morning, cautioning residents of B.C.'s south coastal region that "heavy downpours" are likely today.

According to Environment Canada, the affected areas are as follows:

  • Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»- central including the City of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»- North Shore including West Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»and North Vancouver
  • Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»- northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge

"An upper disturbance embedded in a southwest flow of moist, unstable air will move across the south coast today. Consequently, widespread showers and isolated embedded thunderstorms are in store through much of the day," cautions Environment Canada.

We could be looking at rainfall rates of about 15 to 20 mm within one hour, particularly near the North Shore Mountains, as a result of the downpours.

Friday's heavy rains also bring with them the risk of localized flooding in soaked areas like the North Shore.

Vancouver's forecast for Friday calls for the additional risk of a thunderstorm, and temps steady at around 19C. Rainfall totals could reach 20 to 30 mm. The morning will be windy, and the clouds will hang around into the night.

Saturday will bring a mix of sun and cloud, however the forecast into next week is calling for mostly sunny days through to the weekend.
