Employee at a Richmond McDonald's tests positive for COVID-19

An employee at a McDonald’s in Richmond has tested positive for COVID-19. 

In a release, McDonald’s Canada states that it closed its location in Richmond at 8191 Alderbridge Way out of "an abundance of caution" when an employee tested positive for COVID-19 on Aug. 31. However, the company says reopened at 1:15 a.m. today following a thorough cleaning and sanitation by a certified third party.

All crew members who may have been in close contact with the employee have been asked to self-quarantine until further information is available. The employee worked their last shift on Aug. 27 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For any guests who may have visited the restaurant on Aug 27, McDonald's asks that you follow directions from the experts at the BC Centre for Disease Control by visiting their website .  

"At McDonald’s Canada, our top priority is to protect the health and well-being of our people and our guests – it’s at the core of everything we do," says the company.

"In addition to our existing high standards of cleanliness, restaurants continue to demonstrate our Safety+ commitment, which includes enhanced safety measures to ensure every part of the McDonald’s experience is safe for our guests and employees."

These measures include:

  • Hand sanitizer dispensers available inside the restaurant
  • High-touch surfaces and guest tables will be kept clean and sanitized
  • Floor markers to help guests keep their distance from one other
  • Front counters are fitted with protective screens
  • Clearly marked tables for dine-in to respect physical distancing
  • The number of guests permitted inside a restaurant at one time will be limited based on restaurant size. This also applies to outdoor seating spaces
  • Employees will wear gloves for taking payment and serving guests, and wear masks at all times while working in the restaurant o   For everyone’s safety, we encourage guests to wear a mask or face covering when using our premises
  • Contactless payment options are available at the restaurant, and guests can also order using the McDonald’s mobile app and pay on their phone

COVID-19 is spread by respiratory droplets when a person who is sick coughs or sneezes. It can also be spread when a healthy person touches an object or surface (e.g. a doorknob or a table) with the virus on it, and then touches their mouth, nose or eyes before washing their hands. Most people who get COVID-19 have only mild disease, but a few people can get very sick and may need to go to hospital. The symptoms of COVID-19 may include fatigue, loss of appetite, fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, loss of smell and/or diarrhea.
