Police are urging dog owners to be extra cautious about what their furry friends put into their mouths after a man in North Burnaby came across a chicken bone with a spike in it.

Burnaby RCMP got a report at about 8:45 p.m. on Thursday from a man walking his dog in the 5000 block of Frances Street.

The dog had picked up a bone, and the owner noticed there was a spike sticking out of the end of it.

Thankfully, the canine was not harmed, police said.

“This is the only report we have received recently of this taking place,” Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Brett Cunningham said in an emailed statement. “As always, we’re asking for dog owners to be vigilant, and, if you do see similar bones to this one, to contact police immediately.”

Contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.
