Demolition of the collapsed crane blocking West 41st Avenue is beginning.
The City of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»announced on Aug. 21, two weeks after the crane fell across the major thoroughfare, that work was beginning to remove the twisted metal wreckage.
"We expect it will take two to three days to demolish and remove the crane, after which the City will be able to assess the damage to public infrastructure and begin repairs," states the city's chief building official Saul Schwebs in an email to V.I.A.
"Our goal is to minimize the impact on residents and traffic and complete all restoration work as fast as safely possible."
Exactly how long it'll take to remove the crane, repair the street and reopen it to traffic is uncertain. However, the city says local should expect traffic to still be impacted for at least a week.
"Part of the complexity is that the crane is currently structurally sound; however, as crews begin dismantling it, the balance of weight may shift, potentially creating instability," reads the email. "We are working with relevant partners to ensure a thorough and careful plan is in place to maintain safety throughout the process."
Detours around the crane remain in place at present.
An investigation into the fire is on going.
