After decades on the Drive, the owners of Santa Barbara Market are calling it quits.
"Santa Barbara Market wants to thank the Commercial Drive community for 42 years of love and support," reads a hand-written poster on one of the market's windows. "Thank you and we'll miss you."
Another sign offered thanks from owners and managers Lina, Domingo, Iwona, and the rest of the staff (the original owner, Paco, passed away a few years ago). In another note posted on a window at 1322 Commercial Dr they explain retirement and family time spurred the decision.
Luckily for locals who love the little independent market, the spot will remain a grocery store; the current owners have sold it and while it's closed right now, it will be reopening, though the name and staff may change.
"We are pleased to confirm that the market will continue under the leadership of a new owner who we are currently working with to help ensure a smooth transition," states the note.
On the last day the shop was open under its old ownership, Jan. 31, community members gathered on the street to celebrate their decades in business, singing songs to the owners.
"You've all been such a big part of lives for so many years, part of our kids lives, part of our families' lives," said one man in a speech at the celebration.
The celebration, which drew dozens of people, included a revised version of "Frère Jacques" with lyrics about Santa Barbara and other songs. Local historian Jak King also spoke about the history of the area.
The celebration ended with people thanking the owners and staff.
