Coun. Dylan Kruger said his motion could provide more options for local residents looking for activities close to home

Kruger said the Port Coquitlam project initially included seven local parks. He would like to get staff recommendations on the ideal parks for a Delta pilot.

The City of Delta could be allowing residents to enjoy an alcoholic beverage at a local park.

Coun. Dylan Kruger introduced a notice of motion at council’s Monday afternoon meeting for city staff to explore a pilot project allowing the responsible consumption of alcohol in select local parks effective summer 2021.

It would need council approval before going forward.

Kruger noted that the City of Delta and public health authorities are encouraging people to stay close to home and limit non-essential travel, but many local residents who do not have access to private greenspace have limited options to enjoy a beverage outdoors safely and responsibly in the summer months.

He also noted that the City of Port Coquitlam recently completed a successful pilot project and has now made the change permanent.

He said that city’s pilot program did not result in a measurable increase in complaints to the Port Coquitlam bylaws department.

Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»would also be requested to collaborate to include the two regional parks in Delta with designated opening and closing times as part of the project, added Kruger.

Council will consider his motion at their March 8th meeting.
