After four years police are charging a man in the deaths of two people in 2018, including a 15-year-old bystander.
On January 13, 2018, multiple people were hit by bullets in what police believe was a gang-related shooting. One was the person police believe to be the intended shooter, Kevin Whiteside, 23, who was "involved in gang life" according to the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Police Department (VPD).
Another was 15-year-old Alfred Wong who was hit by a bullet while in the back of his parents' car.
Both died.
Today, March 9, 2022, VPD Chief Adam Palmer announced Kane Carter is being charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault in relation to a thrid person who was shot.
"VPD investigators have long believed that Whiteside, who was involved in gang life, had come to the area that night to shoot a rival who was having dinner at a restaurant near Broadway and Ontario Street, in Mount Pleasant. Gunfire was exchanged on the street as the Wong family passed by the restaurant in their car. A stray bullet entered the vehicle and struck Alfred," the VPD says in a press release.
Palmer notes it was a long and extensive investigation involving hundreds of interviews and thousands of exhibits.
"I’d like to acknowledge the Wong family and thank them for their patience throughout this investigation. This has been an incredibly difficult time in their lives,” adds Palmer. “I hope this arrest will bring them some sense of peace.”
In a statement, Wong's family thank the VPD.
"We hope that Alfred’s death will be a catalyst for change in combating gang violence in the Greater Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Area and that going forward there will be no more similar incidents," reads the statement.
