Canadians are firing back after a national group of photographers and creatives advised members to stop doing porch and front step portraits in the wake of COVID-19.

The Professional Photographers of Canada Tweeted about its recommendation in the morning on April 11, noting that, "We understand the good intentions behind Porch Sessions and we did not come to our decision to recommend against them for our members lightly."

In response, a number of people have Tweeted that they think the group has 'overstepped its bounds' and that it is removing one of the few safe ways to preserve memories during this difficult time.

"This is asinine," remarks . 'Not only should we be documenting these times, this will be good for family memories for decades possibly centuries. Plus the photographer at no point comes even close to the individuals being photographed."

"It goes beyond physical distancing."

adds, "Instead of telling photographers not to do something that is perfectly safe (the distance is the point!), how about working FOR photographers, most of whom have no income now? And yes, photography IS essential. Can’t live on bread alone."

Ross Outerbridge, the B.C. National Director for PPOC, tells Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» in a phone call that the group is simply following the national health authority's recommendation. He notes that a number of photographers have actually been upset to see these kinds of photos being taken, and that they agree they go against health measures.

As for photos through the window, Outerbridge adds that, "This still increases the number of times people leave home. They should be limiting contact."

Outerbridge also notes that stopping outside of a home to take photos is problematic in itself, as it increases the chance of spread.

"Photography is not an essential service. We need to do everything we can here."
