'Change can bring mixed emotions': Cafe shuts down after a decade on Commercial Drive, new breakfast spot moves in

A German-influenced cafe has arrived on the Drive.

After more than a decade on The Drive, Tangent Cafe is gone, already replaced by a spot called Daybreakers.

Tangent Cafe, located at 2095 Commercial Dr., offered up breakfast, lunch, and dinner service with a Malaysian twist to locals for years, serving a mix of Eastern and Western foods like Malaysian poutine and "Wings of the World" (which included a "Vancouvarian" flavour) along with things like veggie burgers next to noodle dishes like mee goreng.

It also hosted local jazz musicians on a regular basis.

However, the Tangent website has been redirected and its social media presence deleted as a new cafe called Daybreakers moved in.

In a , ownership says that this week it's been transitioning from Tangent to Daybreakers.

"Working hand-in-hand with Kevin, who has been at the helm of our kitchen through many changes over the past 10 years, we have crafted a new menu that combines European and Canadian comfort food," explains the new owners.

"The transition from old ownership, who felt it was their time to move on, to our current direction could not have been possible without the unwavering dedication of the existing management and team," they add.

On its website, the new cafe is described as "a welcoming sanctuary of warmth, comfort food, and heartfelt hospitality."

Foods include collaborations with Kaisereck (the German deli on Granville Island), jagerschnitzel, and frikadelle steak, along with burgers, salads, and a variety of breakfast foods.

"We understand that change can bring mixed emotions, and our aim is to provide a comfortable and inviting environment," note the new owners.

The new restaurant is open for breakfast (starting at 8 a.m.) and lunch seven days a week and for dinner (and later) from Wednesday to Sunday.

Live music will continue under the Daybreakers banner as well, with already scheduled.

Online business records with the city show the original business license for Tangent Cafe had "gone out of business" in March; shortly thereafter the Daybreakers team received their business license for the address. The new owners opted to run the restaurant under the Tangent banner until making a full transition to Daybreakers this month.
