Burnaby drivers commuting into Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»are going to want to use a different route than Highway 1 this morning.
Supporters of Save Old Growth have blocked traffic heading into Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»in all 6 westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway by Willingdon Avenue. (Junction 29).
One person is locked in place with a heavy barrel and group is expecting arrests.
This is the second disruption in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»this week and is part of an ongoing escalation across the province to demand the provincial government pass legislation to immediately end all old growth logging in British Columbia, says the group.
A total of 77 arrests have been made so far this year.
“I am blocking the Trans-Canada Highway because 600-plus British Columbians died during the heat dome last summer,” said protester Bill Winder, 69 and a retired UBC professor, in a statement. “The premier famously said that fatalities are a fact of life. We cannot accept fatalities that come from the government's neglect of its duty of care. Federal and provincial governments have egregiously neglected their duty to combat climate breakdown. It is up to us now to make sure the government understands that climate breakdown is not a fact of life - it is the end of life as we know it."
