Four people injured in alleged machete attack at downtown Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­SRO

A large police presence took up much of the Granville Street entertainment district last night.

One man has been arrested and taken to hospital with serious injuries after allegedly attacking four people in a rooming house on Granville Street this weekend.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­police were called around 10 p.m. on Aug. 6 by firefighters after they responded to a call for a fire inside a single-room occupancy (SRO) residence in Granville Street's entertainment district near The Roxy Cabaret (932 Granville St.).

A man had allegedly lit his suite on fire, according to police.

"The man subsequently attacked and stabbed four people inside the building," according to a media release from police. "When officers arrived, they were confronted by the suspect who was still armed with the weapon. Shots were fired by police and the suspect was injured."

Police say in all five people were taken to hospital including the alleged suspect who has serious but non-life threatening injuries.

"(The) four victims of the machete attack are also in hospital for serious, life-altering injuries," state police.

They note there is no risk to public safety at this time. 

On they note the business was closed last night.

"Due to an incident that occurred at a neighbouring business the Roxy will be closed tonight," they explain in a Tweet around 11:30 p.m., Aug. 6.

"None of our staff nor our patrons were involved in the incident and all are safe. The incident did not occur inside the Roxy," they go on to say.

In , a chaotic scene is shown with several police cars along with other emergency vehicles on Granville Street amongst people as the popular destination for nightclubs and late-night partiers fills with crowds.

Vancouver's major crimes team is investigating the incident. The  has been called in to investigate the incident, as well.
