Jewellery is imbued with a reverence that other accessories aren't afforded.
For better or worse, jewellery is something we hold on to even when it no longer serves us. Shoes and handbags get donated or discarded but jewellery languishes and takes up space. We feel guilty because it's something that's meant to be special, even if it's a chunky pendant necklace on a long chain that screams 2014. Even if an ex gave it to us. Even if it's broken.
A B.C. artist and Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»jewellery brand have joined forces to take unwanted jewellery and give it a renewed purpose in the form of art.
Lover's Tempo has started an initiative called the in the hopes of creating a more sustainable and carbon-neutral brand, in doing so they have teamed up with (also known to the internet as ) to take end-of-life jewellery that would otherwise be thrown away and turn it into mixed media sculptural artwork.
The goal is to foster a dialogue about creativity, art, conscious consumerism, and sustainability.
Unwanted chains, earrings, gems, and stones will be transformed into five pieces of art by Krysa and displayed at an upcoming pop-up on Granville Island running from September 26 to October 2 before being digitally auctioned off.
100 per cent of the proceeds will benefit , a climate action organization that facilitates the planting of mangrove trees in Madagascar which can capture and store more carbon than almost any other tree on the planet.
The team is encouraging people to recycle their own tarnished or unwanted jewels by offering a to those who send them their old Lover's Tempo jewellery. "As part of our ongoing goal to create a more sustainable business, we’ve been exploring ways to design a full lifecycle for our products. Being able to see products at the end of their life being turned into beautiful works of art has been inspiring," says Lover’s Tempo Co-Founder Elaine Kim Smith in a media release.
Krysa will be at the pop-up on Monday, September 26 from noon to 2 p.m. for people to say hello and discuss her art.
