It was in 1912 that the VPD hired its first female聽employees: Nancy (or Lurancy) Harris and Minnie Miller (or Millar). Their salary was $80 a month. Police worked eight hours a day, seven days a week. They were expected to attend court on their own time, as well as 鈥渁ny celebrations or parades where their attendance was expected.鈥澛燘y this time, the police department had become quite progressive; they聽now had a chief鈥檚 car, a detective car, a paddy wagon and an ambulance. Later in the year the VPD also got its first police boat.
