TRIUMF, “one of the world’s leading subatomic physics laboratories,” is opened by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in 1976. The facility contains the world’s largest cyclotron, part of which is seen here while under construction; it accelerates 1,000 trillion particles each second.
