St. Paul’s Hospital

Patient haven. St. Paul’s Hospital was built by the Sisters of Providence, a Catholic religious order, at the invitation of Bishop Paul Durieu. Its location on Burrard Street at Comox was originally so remote from the centre of the city that patients arrived along a rutted wagon trail. By 1905, when this photograph was taken, an additional 50 beds had been added to the original 25.
